A Tokyo man was accused for attempting to take upskirt photos with his phone, arrested by police, and was taken to court for violating the Tokyo Nuisance Prevention Ordinance. However he was found not guilty during appeals, and requested compensation for damages on 12/17. It became clear that “during interrogation, the investigator falsified statements in the work papers,” and the city was ordered to pay 1,100,000 yen ($10,530).

According to the judgement, in June 2008, the man was viewing an image on his cellphone while ascending an escalator. A woman suspected that he was taking an upskirt photo, so she promptly found an officer and he was escorted to the police station. The investigator falsified his statements, fabricating descriptions such as “his hobbies is to watch upskirt videos” and “he saw a woman and his carnal desires took control.” The judge noted that “the investigation work papers are a very crucial piece of evidence, and this created an unfair disadvantage to the man.”
In September 2008 the man was indicted for the crime, and was ordered by the court to pay a 300,000 yen ($2,871) penalty, but the Tokyo High Court found him to be not guilty on January 2010.

痛いニュースThe woman is innocent?
He should receive compensation from the woman, too
The investigator should be imprisoned with hard labor. Unforgivable
Falsifying statements? Arrest that investigator!
Wow, it’s about Japan…
You really think $10k can repair the damage made to his career and relationships?
He was involved in this ridiculous mess since 2008 and only got $10k w
I guess we can’t use our phones on the escalators anymore
You have to get a lawyer, or investigators will falsify statements. They may be cops, but there are also bad cops. Many decisions are made by intuition, not facts. This case is only the tip of the iceberg
What a waste of 2~3 years, and in the end it was falsified. Give him at least $300k
>> Seriously, he may have been fired from his job by now
What’s wrong with watching adult videos? Make it illegal if there’s a problem, dammit
What the hell? Forget the woman, the investigator is the criminal
Does the woman who accused him just get away with it? This is going to keep happening if she doesn’t realize that she seriously messed up someone’s life
I see. If I’m ever being accused, I’ll run the hell away as fast as I can
Did the woman apologize to him!? Her mistake cost another person’s life, she needs to know this!
Screw up someone’s life and only get $10k back, are they idiots? I think even $1 million wouldn’t be worth that
These types of women never apologize for this kind of stuff, a simple apology would feel so much better as a victim…
Hiring a lawyer costs around $10k for the guy, at least give him $100k in damages
Somehow the officer is innocent, and we have to pay the guy back with taxes we paid… This is crazy
Holy crap this is sacry www I’ll go color my phone’s camera lens with a Sharpie www
I get excited when I see a woman, and it’s not uncommon for a man to have an adult movie at his house. We’re all guilty then
Five years of his life was ruined, $10k doesn’t even come close to fixing that
Mistakes are fine, but lying is unforgivable
This is what happens when you empower the stupid
A woman who falsely created a crime
An investigator that falsified statements
Until these two are punished, false accusations will continue without end
good to see that cops can’t be trusted all over the world, not just in my country. How can a woman be mistaken in someone taking an upskirt picture on an elevator? did he drop his phone and fiddle around while picking it up? no he was standing up straight, looking at his phone
