1 in 20 adult women have worked in the sex industry!? This shocking statistic was analyzed in the book “Night Time Economics”, by economist Yasuyuki Iida.
It’s hard to believe that this many women have worked in the sex industry, but Iida breaks it down in this way. “Currently, there are around 10,000 businesses in Japan that offer sex as a service. Looking at their websites, an average business has around 30 women. Therefore, 10,000 x 30 which yields 300,000 women.”
Every year, around 30,000 women enter and leave the industry. In 2012, there was an estimated 700,000 women aged 25 to 29, so that means 5% of them (30,000) have experience in the sex industry.
And this is how the “20 in 1” calculation was surmised, but is not a definitive number as it was created via several assumptions.
